Long Time, No Entry Jan. 14th, 2007 @ 03:37 am
So, it's 2:34 in the morning, and there's a drunk guy sleeping in my bed. No no - it's not what you're thinking. He came in here around 2 asking if he could stay and talk to Vero and I for a while. He got sleepy and fell asleep with my blanket covering his eyes, however. Hoc est collegium. (This is college.) :) I wonder if he has really fallen asleep... what to do...

Home for Homecoming Oct. 7th, 2006 @ 10:46 pm
Little Shop of Horrors is just about the most hilarious movie I've seen in a while... Thank you Chris Ouellette. XD

This weekend is homecoming weekend for Cinco Ranch HS, so I decided to come back home for the game and the band people (/ex band people/orchestra people). O:) I was thrilled to see everyone... And everyone seemed happy sans Mr. Jones. :( He looks even more depressed than usual. But his birthday is coming up, so maybe I can send him something.... XD Anyhow, we went to I-hop after the game, ate, talked, and had fun. And today I went to Palais Royal and bought a snazzy black pants+jacket combo to wear for concerts at Trinity. Then, I went to dinner with my brother and his friends, but more importantly Chris Ouellette and Liz Ambs. I got to hear a lot about how the sax section was doing lately, and about the band this year. After dinner I took Chris and Liz to blockbuster though to rent two videos: Little Shop of Horrors and Officespace! Excellent films! I drove Chris Ouellette home and now I'm here!

It's a strange feeling to be home... It's even messier than when I left! =D Mom's been working on props, so housekeeping has not exactly been top priority... neither has grocery shopping it seems. XD I wonder if I'll get a home-cooked meal while I'm here... ^^;;;

HEY EVERYBODY! Sep. 27th, 2006 @ 12:34 am
I hadn't posted anything in a while so I was gonna let yall know a little about what going on!

On my birthday I had large buckets of smelly water dumped on me - as goes the Trinity tradition ... at least as of recently because there's no water in the fountain (because of the drought in San Antonio...) It was pretty gross. XD

On September 17th it was pouring rain in the evening... I got caught in it on the way back from flute/oboe sectionals. We decided to go running out in the rain when I got back to the dorm (and it looked like a lot of other people had a very similar idea). We went down into the quad and walked out in the grass... and then people started throwing mud. XD And soon some of us were reduced to wrestling while others watched. A large circle formed of residents of Calvert, Witt, and Miller around the mud pit. I ended up wrestling Kelly-Merka twice - didn't do so hot as you might imagine, but I tackled her to the ground pretty well the second time! =D Too bad she accidentally got her fingers in my mouth... Gross. Anyhow, we got soaked and muddy and awesome. Lots of great pictures of that on facebook for those interested.

Last Saturday Ross, Teresa, and Sandra visited us at Trinity because there was a Shakira concert that night in San Antonio. It was pretty awesome seeing them. We decided to go downtown to the riverwalk to eat and I got to take the bus for the first time... It was kinda weird... and kinda cool. After Ross, Teresa, and Sandra ran after their bus after dinner and made it just in time, Amy and I were left to figure out how to get back to Trinity. We walked to the bus stop that it showed on the bus schedule, but the sign said bus 8 N. St. Mary's! That's not where we wanna go! So we keep wandering the San Antonio streets... and then make it back to that bus stop and Lindsey realizes something... N. St. Mary's must be the name of the route... but bus 8 is definitely the bus we want to get on. So we wait there for the bus to come along, worrying the entire time that it won't come. It does come, however, it just has the wrong number on the front... Lindsey sees the number on the side as it begins to drive away. XD We ran after it and got it in time. Lol. It did stop at Trinity luckily. It was a great experience getting to know the public transportation here.

Also this weekend we rented and watched Silence of the Lambs!!! (I'd already seen it, but such a great movie!) Most of the people watching hadn't seen it, but me and Joe, and I think Catherine was the only one who was really disturbed. XD We found out afterwards that she had NEVER seen a horror movie! How horrible is that? Well, she stayed up in my room late that night cuz she didn't want to go to bed. :) So yesterday morning I walk out the door to head to physics class and I see the hall taped off with a really fake crime-scene body outline on the ground... and then Catherine points to a chair on the other side of the hall with a sign saying "Put the lotion in the basket" with a bottle of lotion and a bucket underneath. XDDD If you haven't seen the movie, you wouldn't understand, but it was freaking hilarious. We realized it was Joe and so we taped the lotion back on his door with a sign saying "It rubs the lotion on its skin!" and a plastic knife with a sign "I'm having a friend for dinner". Then on Family Guy tonight (which I was watching with Joe, Ginger, Catherine, and Adam) there was a Silence of the Lambs reference with the "it puts the lotion in the basket" thing. XD We were in hysterics.

No crazy frat parties as of yet. Vero had a really horrible experience this weekend so I'm even more hesitant. But I'll go check out some retarded party sometime. O:)

I hope to talk to yall again later! Goodnight!

Trinity Pics )

Life's been treating me pretty well so far at Trinity. I haven't been bogged down too heavily in work yet. My birthday is coming up and we're planning some kinda off-campus adventure. XD Maybe to Brackenridge and an art museum. (yay for expense-free trips) I want Joe to come to but he's so cold about it. :( He's got his "priorities", so if he's busy with homework, he won't come. *sigh* Adam, Catherine, and I went to the Riverwalk and River Center today though - got lost on the way back home. Adam and I - "Right!"; Catherine - "Left!" ... To say the least Catherine was right. XD Good times.

Hope everyone is doing awesomely - especially you high schoolers! I've only been in school for a week and a half and it feels like double that...

More New Student Orientation at Trinity Aug. 23rd, 2006 @ 12:27 am
From now on I'm just going to tell you the highlights of my time at Trinity, rather than dully listing my day-to-day happenings. First, on Sunday evening we were invited to watch the most incredible documentary: The Essential Blue-Eyed. Some of you may have heard of this or a very similar experiment, but basically it proves that minority groups act the way in which society stereotypically percieves them (listless, apathetic, sometimes acting out in violence) BECAUSE of the way society treats them. A school teacher once performed this experiment on her third grade class: for one day she would treat the blue-eyed children in her class as if they were minorities by degrading them with subtle language and making it obvious that brown-eyed children were just more intelligent. It was shocking to see the huge change in the blue-eyed children... there were pictures of them before the experiment (innocent and happy) and after (apathetic and dark). The school teacher later performed this experiment on white adults, and that is what the movie was about... many of the blue-eyed adults were reduced to tears, fear, and subordinance. This goes far beyond racism though. I started thinking about all the people in my life that are just DIFFERENT than the majority of the population... I can understand that kind of pain now I think - better than I did before. And from now on I can never say again, "That's gay" or "That's retarded"; it's just too ignoble to me now.

After the movie we were herded to the infamous "Playfair"; we had no idea what to expect... When we entered the gym we found Trinity students lined up on both sides of the door, creating a path for us to walk through - they were cheering loudly and hollering and just trying to get us riled up. So we made our way through the path of students and joined in with the cheering when we reached the end of the path. What followed was one of the most FUN and EXCITING get-to-know-random-people games EVER. We had to run around and get into groups with people we didn't know based on birthday, or the arm we were holding up, or some other random attribute. And in those groups fun, crazy stuff that just helped loosen up our personalities. I felt SO high on life after that. XD And now, whenever someone yells "I want a standing ovation!" Two people have to pick him/her up on their shoulders and everyone has to clap loudly in appreciation. XDDD It's the best thing ever.

The keynote speaker on Monday night was wonderful. She was the most sarcastic, cruel speaker I've ever heard and absolutely delightful to listen to. XD After that a whole bunch of people congregated in my dorm room to hang out; I was so happy and it was very fun discussing the most random things that came into our heads. Catherine, Terry, Adam, Joe, and other Lindsey were therem, and they're all such unique people. I lost the first round of the Rock, Paper, Scissors tournament to win free books (darn), but after that we decided to watch the Daily Show with Jon Stewart and then headed to the Witt Center to watch Crash (wonderful!). It was a late, but very exciting night.

Today we registered for classes and until the evening, there wasn't much else to do. But I can tell you what classes I'm signed up for: Intro. to Mechanics, the physics lab attached to it, Chemistry in the Modern World, the chem. lab attached to it, HUMA every day of the week, and band! I'm pretty excited, even though mom is freaking out/worried. Registration though had to be the most stressful activity of my life. XD I almost didn't get into Physics which filled up unusually fast, but Adrian (thank gods) called the department head and the head created more space in the classes for myself and other students to register in later. Yay Adrian! My hero.

Tonight was AWESOME though. My first REAL professional band concert (no offense to the Pants ;)). We got to the baseball field, had to turn around because no one told us that we weren't allowed to bring purses in, and then came back and got free t-shirts. The cover-band was ok... sorta boring... but I guess cover-bands are supposed to be less exciting. Catherine and I ended up kinda sitting/lying down on a patch of soft grass. When Jack Ingram's groupies were setting up though, the front stage area cleared quite a bit and we saved spots up front to stand in. I was growing excessively impatient when finally the band came out! And must I say, what an entrance! It kicked off the concert with a bang and from then on we were dancing and clapping and having a blast. Between songs he'd give us funny advice, or talk to us about how he's glad to be back in San Antonio where his wife and daughter live, or what a beautiful campus we have; he just seemed like an all-around great guy. The lead electric guitarist, Chris Matthews, was cool and weird at the same time - strange black hair standing on end as if by static, a thin, muscle-less frame that made him almost look feminine, and tatooes with a very emo-ish looking get-up. The other guitarist was boring, but the drummer was cool cuz he smiled at me! =D After the concert Catherine and I were so pumped that we decided to stand in line so that he'd sign our t-shirts. Catherine had the idea to get her camera, and since it was a very long line, she ran to the dorm and back in plenty of time to get it. When we finally got up to him he was super-sweet, signed our shirts, signed a picture of him that Catherine bought one of her friends, and took a picture with us - he was very cold/sweaty. :) It was a pretty rockin' concert.

» My first days at Trinity
It was an early morning on August 18th. After Mrs. Lanham picked up Clay and Chelsea for school, mom, dad, and I finished packing up the car. I slept through most of the drive, except a stop at Bucky's. When we got nearer to Trinity, we got stuck in a long line, since we had to wait for other people to unpack before we could move up. Rebecca's car was right behind ours, and I found out soon after that that Amy's was 5 cars behind us, so we all got there at about the same time. When we parked in front of Calvert hall, a whole bunch of Trinity students helped us unload the car and, after finally finding Adrien, everything was in my room before I knew it. I met Veronica, my roommate (who's super nice), and Catherine and Terry, my suitemates. I unpacked boxes for a while, and then went to the Bell Center to get my yearbook picture and my Tigercard. (Mom got us lost on the way to Bell of course) We grabbed lunch and made it just in time for the Welcome Speech in Laurie Auditorium. Then we broke off into our advising groups; our advisor was Dr. Livingstone - very cool with his hawaiian shirts! Most of the people on my floor I found out are at least considering Pre-Med. Next, we went to a seminar to educate us about San Antonio (it was surprisingly helpful). We got into our RM groups for dinner, and then, after getting my new hoodie out of the car, mom and dad left with a warm goodbye. Soon we had a Residence Hall meeting where we learned useful information like - you're not allowed to use the fake back porches in Calvert b/c they might not be structurally stable! o.O We were planning on climbing out the window and using ours... there are no doors to the porches. XD Then there was the Coates Caper party where we all signed up to win an I-pod (I didn't win) and danced in an alcohol-free environment. XD I lost Veronica at the party and ended up going to sleep at 12 not knowing where she was. I woke up to her coming in at 2 AM - there was an international student get-together thing. It was pretty funny - that party girl. ;)

Woke up in time to get dressed and go to the Computer Skills Assessment test. It was kinda hard, XD but we'll see how I did. Then a seminar on Information Resources at Trinity (we have 4 channels we can watch on the internet here (Fox, ESPN, Comedy Central, and... something else) and they showed the FUNNIEST movie about internet safety. XD So great.) Lunch. Amy and I ran from lunch to the Witt Center to get help from the ITS guys - it's a lot harder to connect to Trinity's server if you didn't buy your comp. from the school. Then the Academic Fair where I talked to a Latin professor and Dr. Worman especially. I almost got lost going to the Health Professions seminar after that. The more I hear about Health Professions the more I question it... so I'm still not sure. Then I pretty much got lost again looking for the Chapman building to take the Latin Placement exam. But I found a map and figured it out - luckily the professor and a whole bunch of other students were late too. Prof. Hirschfeld was a really nice woman - incredibly tan - I could tell she's been out in the digsites for a long while. The exam wasn't too difficult, and I got to talk to all the Latin people there - great people - and I even recognized the president of the TSJCL there. XD Weird. Dinner. Amy and I tried to go to the Smith Music building to practice but it wasn't open yet. Then a seminar about college life - very humorous skits. And our floor went out to a second dinner with Adrien at a Greek restaurant. I had never had baklava, and it was HEAVEN. At dinner I found out what partyer's half our floor is. XD We were loud and obnoxious most of the time we were there - clapping and cheering when we introduced someone from a different group, joking around. It was pretty entertaining. That night I participated in Spontaneous Constructions with Adam, Kelly, Douglas, and Adrian. We built a viking warship out of boxes and random trash they had lying out for us. We got the "construction that travelled farthest from home" award and got some Chipotle gift cards. Very fun. But then I realized I didn't bring my room ket out with me and Veronica was out! =-O So I hung out in Kelly's room for a while... check again. She was still out. :( I went to Adrian and asked if there were extra room keys (and luckily there were), but his Tigercard stopped working all the sudden and we couldn't get into the secret hidden room! Then we had to go around and find another RM who had a working Tigercard and when we found it I was finally able to get the keys and get into my room. I went to bed at 1:30. XD A lotta people were out at a frat party that night, so I really didn't get to bed THAT late comparatively...

This morning I woke up late. I checked my e-mail and I found out I've gotten out of 3 semesters of Latin and can start on my 4th if I'd like. Only problem is that class isn't till 2nd semester. But I think I'll be too busy to take Latin this semester. We'll see. Now it's off to the Music Lunch-in!
» A Busy Day Leading Up to My Departure
I woke up WAY too early this morning! (9! ...Oh shush. Considering the time of morning I fall alseep, that's pretty early... XD) Anyhow, I had a optometrist appointment at 10. Fun stuff. Dr. Choi had a reliever working today though, and she was incredibly nice. She was young so we talked a lot about college and she gave me some advice. (You know, the usual stuff - join lots of clubs, don't be a study-holic, not a party-holic, etc.) Then much shopping ensued. Got a whole bunch of basic stuff for the dorm: food, water, soap, etc.

Then for lunch mom and I met Mandy and Amy at Hong Kong Garden so that Mandy could tell us some college stories and some tips about Trinity. It was really useful, and Mandy's so nice about it. :) I'm finding that all the upperclassmen I meet are ridiculously helpful at Trinity... of course they've all been girls... XD

More shopping... And then when I get home I carry up all my things to my room and wait and wait for Andrew to call so that we could get together for a goodbye-dinner thing. When he DOES call it's like 6:25 and he tells me dinner's at 7 at a place called Sweet Tomatoes and that I need to call Natalie and Amy! So I'm rushing to call everyone: can't get a hold of Nat, Amy will come, but first she's gotta pick up her brother from marching practice! So I wait... and she calls and she says that her brother's staying after practice to PRACTICE and that she'll call her mom and see if she'll come pick him up instead. So I wait... and then she calls and tells me she'll be home/ready in 10-15 minutes. So I wait some more. XD In between Amy's calls I'm calling Andrew to tell him who's coming and to try to get directions from Keith but talking to his mom instead. By the time I finally leave the house to get Amy it's 7... I really hate rushing/poor planning/wondering if they'll have already eaten dinner by the time we even get there. XD The drive to Sweet Tomatoes is about 23 minutes on I-10, which I'm not well accustomed to. I got there will minimal danger though. All the construction makes the drivers out there even crazier, I swear. o.o We walk into Sweet Tomatoes, and there's Mimi and Keith - and that's it. XD Andrew, Tom, and Hank arrive soon after, but it's funny that I still worry about being "on time" when really there's no telling with these crazy people! ;) Sweet Tomatoes was kind of a buffet, salad, bakery, soup place... it was ok. But it was nice seeing some people before I go. The goodbye was rather depressing. XD Hugging Andrew like 4 times. :( I'm gonna miss those guys.
» So Soon Till I Leave...
It doesn't seem entirely RIGHT that I'm leaving in 4 days... Especially since I'm not packed, nor have all the odds and ends needed to live by myself. But it's true. I'll be far from Katy in mere days.
» Trip to San Antonio
Today was different! =-O Everyone woke up early (except Lieren - she slept in accidentally XD), and mom and I dropped off Clay and Chelsea at band practice, and then we went to Fulshire to pick up reeds from Mrs. Lawrence. After that we started the long trip to San Antonio, so that I could have my first lesson with Dr. Ackerman/pick up the oboe that I'll be playing at Trinity. I was starving all morning until finally we got to San Antonio and stopped at a gas station for a snackie. We made the trip alright, except mom missed an exit... but we still had time to spare. So I met Mr. Ackerman at his house for a lesson at 12. He seemed very nice, but he kept asking me questions with difficult answers. XD He really got into the technicality of playing the oboe... and I can understand that. I've just never been introduced into all the complexities: generally I've gotten by by making a pretty sound and playing the right notes in tune. XD And you'd THINK that was all I need. But really I need to fix my embouchure quite a bit and he caught on to that right away. Anyhow, I only get 30 minute lessons from him cuz I'm not a music major. :-P Oh well!
(Random note that doesn't really matter: I met Mark's significant other at the door! He seems really nice too! ^^)

After that we drove around the streets near Trinity to see if there was anything within walking distance (not really... I'll have to take the bus/guilt people into driving me places). Ate at Whataburger. Then we found a place to park on campus and started wandering around aimlessly... I have a hard time finding my way around for such a small campus. XD We were walking around the science buildings, so we got back in the car and found the parking lot nearer to the residential halls. We found a map at Witt (finally) and found Calvert. It's definitely not the best residential hall of the bunch. You can tell which ones have been renovated and which ones haven't yet. Calvert is one of those. The first floor is the worst though, the third floor (which I am on) looks nicer I think. It's still a nice dorm though. Two beds, two nightstands, ample closet space, a microwave, fridge, carpeted floors, overhead lighting (bwhahah Chris)... my only qualms are Calvert's fake porches (the one in the back doesn't have a door leading to it o.O but the open walkway out front has enough room for chairs and a nice view of the oak trees) and the doorless toilet area (we're gonna use a shower curtain there). I'll be fine though. It's rather nice for a first year residential hall. After finding Calvert we meandered back to the Coates College Center and stopped in at the Registrar's office to get Course Catalogue! Finally that blessed book! It'll make choosing courses a lotttt easier. Had dinner at Buckey's on the way home. Yay for Buckey's!

Anyhow, there will be many pictures posted on my LJ when I move in Aug. 18th! My apologies to everyone who starts school tomorrow. >.
